The Allen Centennial Garden (ACG) — named after UW professors Dr. Oscar and Ethel Allen — serves as UW’s primary living laboratory, a teaching garden + facility on-campus.
🌷 Building roots
Located off the shores of Lake Monona, the garden was home to only the agricultural dean's residence until ACG’s construction in 1985. Built around the residence, the design complements existing landscapes + plants on the grounds, featuring the Goff Larch tree — a 100-year-old tree transplanted from Door County. |

🌷 Evergreen architecture
Believed by school children to be haunted, the agricultural dean's residence is the centerpiece of the garden. The Victorian Gothic mansion was designed by Allan D. Conover and Lew F. Porter + is often referred to as 10 Babcock + the E.B. Fred House. Having housed several deans over the century, the mansion is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

You’ve decided to build a home and have the details down pat (thanks to your nights scrolling Pinterest + Houzz), but now comes the hard part — choosing the right builder. As you begin the hunt, here’s five things to look for in a local home builder (and how Veridian Homes implements these in how they do business): A guaranteed closing date
Many builders won’t commit to a closing date upfront and, as a result, dates often get pushed back further and further during the homebuilding process.
Veridian Homes assigns homebuyers a guaranteed closing date at contract signing and, as a bonus, homes take approx. 146 days to complete. According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 Survey of Construction, the estimated average length of time from start to completion of new privately owned residential buildings is 6.8 months.
