Whether you’re an animal lover, a bookworm, a holiday enthusiast, or someone who wants to give back to community members, there’s a nearby volunteer opportunity for you and your crew. Here are 6 Madison organizations to show a little extra love to this holiday season:
🦃 If the holidays are your favorite time of the year
- Goodman Community Center | Help feed families during the holidays by volunteering for the Thanksgiving Basket Drive or organizing an in-person or virtual food drive.
- Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin | Give back to the community this holiday season by donating money, food, time, or hosting a food + fund drive with this hunger-relief charity.
- United Way of Dane County | This nonprofit is looking for volunteers to fill more than 500 opportunities that include decorating for the holidays, delivering meals, keeping senior citizens company + donating, sorting, and distributing new toys for the Empty Stocking Club and Toys for Tots.
💙 If you want support those experiencing homelessness
- The Beacon | Support those who are experiencing homelessness in Dane County by helping make guests feel welcome, cooking, serving + working in the Computer Lab or laundry facility.
- Habitat for Humanity of Dane County | Sign up as an individual or bring your crew to participate in a one-time construction volunteer opportunity or join a regular crew and work on projects related to carpentry, drywall, siding, interior trim, painting, and landscaping.

- The City of Madison will not be collecting trash and recycling on Thurs., Nov. 25 + Fri., Nov. 26 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The drop-off sites will also be closed on these two days. If your trash and recycling are normally collected on Wed. and Thurs., have your carts to the curb by 6:30 a.m. on Wed., Nov. 24. If your trash and recycling are normally collected on Fri. and Mon., have your carts to the curb by 6:30 a.m. on Mon., Nov. 29. ♻️
- The City of Madison Winter drop-off site hours will go into effect on Mon., Nov. 29. During winter hours, only the drop-off sites at 1501 W. Badger Rd. and 4602 Sycamore Ave. will be open + you can find the full winter hours schedule here. 🚮

- Tyrol Basin announced that online ticket sales will begin this week. Online ticket availability will be posted every Sunday at 5 p.m. for the next consecutive weeks — one week at a time — through the season + the Tuesday Special tickets and rental equipment are priced at $15 each. 🏂
- Registration is now open for Warner Park Community Rec. Center’s Monday Night Women’s Basketball League. Teams can sign up through Fri., Dec. 17 + the season starts on Mon., Jan. 3. 🏀
